What is a Tagua?
We might have heard that some art pieces are made out of Tagua.
Tagua is a vegetable ivory that grows in the rain forest of South american countries such as Ecuador, Brazil, Peru, Panamá and surroundings . The name comes from the resemblance of its color and shape of the animal ivory; it is white inside and turns out shiny and clear when it is polished. The tree looks like a palm but it is not a palm and when it has grown, the seeds fall naturally, and they are ready to pick them up and use them as art creations . Tagua has been used as food and as art material for centuries.
Here we have some necklaces made out of tagua where all the procedures are made naturally and environmentally sustainable. They are made by our Kichwa women friends from Cotacachi la Calera-Ecuador,
